Margarida Catalão Lopes é doutorada e licenciada em Economia. É Professora Associada da Universidade de Lisboa, lecionando Economia e Organização Industrial. Antes do doutoramento, trabalhou no Departamento de Estudos do Banco de Portugal, na Unidade de Sistema Bancário. Colaborou com a Autoridade da Concorrência e é coautora de um livro sobre fusões e aquisições. Tem publicado em várias revistas internacionais com revisão por pares, cobrindo temas distintos como fusões de empresas, qualidade e diferenciação vertical, informação, publicidade, responsabilidade social das empresas, finanças e mercados bancários, transição energética, aplicações na saúde.
